On June 2, Daniel Hope released Music for a New Century on Deutsche Grammophon with New Century Chamber Orchestra, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season. Also featuring Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov, the album comprises four works – three of them world premiere recordings – commissioned by the orchestra, alone or as part of a consortium, from Philip Glass, Tan Dun, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Jake Heggie.
Music for a New Century demonstrates the enthusiasm with which New Century is committed to new compositions and contemporary classical music. Hope explains:
“Spontaneously, you probably wouldn’t associate these four composers with each other, but with this combination, we’re celebrating the orchestra and its creative engagement with new music.”
